When Ravi Shastri’s tenure ended at the end of 2021, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly said his former teammate and VVS testing specialist Laxman was interested in becoming India’s head coach. The job, however, went to Laxman’s close friend Rahul Dravid.
Despite this, Laxman, who is now the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is expected to coach Indian team T20I in the upcoming two-game series against hosts Ireland.
Dravid will be with the Indian Test team for their fifth and final game against England in the UK which kicks off on July 1.
VVS Laxman had previous coaching experience in domestic cricket
“He will travel with the Indian team to Dublin”, said BCCI secretary Jay Shah, revealing that Laxman will be in charge in Dravid’s absence.
It’s a similar arrangement to Team India last year. Regular coach Shastri was with Virat Kohli’s red ball team during the Indian tour of the UK, after the WTC final and before the five Tests against England then managed by Joe Root, while Dravid was stepped in as backup coach for the white ball side, who had traveled to Sri Lanka for three ODIs and 3 T20Is each.
This will be Laxman’s first coaching assignment with the senior men’s team. He was part of the backstage team of the India U-19 team that won the title in the Caribbean island earlier this year, beating England in the final.
The selection committee headed by Chetan Sharma has yet to name the Irish T20I team.
VVS Laxman was part of the Hyderabad Sunrisers set up in the past and also acted as a mentor for the Bengal Ranji team.
Laxman may have to work with India’s first captain and a relatively inexperienced squad.
